1900
The early summer weather 1907 is the worst in 110 years. But soon it becomes lighter. After two meetings, the 2:nd and 4:th of June Helsingborgs IF is found through a union of Svithiod and Stattena (today's Stattena IF was found 1922). The club’s cradle actually stands in the so called ”Svanahuset” at Karl Krooks street. Tage Johansson one of the founders, tells: ”When I after the Saturday dance followed my present wife Alma home, I often ran into Georg Bengtsson who had his fiancée Emma in the same house. The discussion of course often was about our dear football and one day the idea came up to join Svithiod, my club, and Stattena IF, thus the club Georg belonged to.”The club play its first match already the 6:th of June 1907 and wins over IFK Helsingborg with 6-2. HIF quickly becomes a very respected team and it greatly depends on the two stars, Otto Malm and Georg Bengtsson, outside right, captain of the team and one of HIF:s founders. Otto Malm soon becomes feared for his precision shooting and when he sometime doesn’t participate the opponents are very grateful. There is no other player in Sweden that is even close to his efficiency. The season 1911 e.g he scores 69 goals in 24 matches and 1913 it becomes 78 goals in 35 matches. Totally he scores 735 goals in 500 matches in the A-team.
1908 the club get a new president, the legendary John ”Bill” Pettersson that thru the years bring HIF to great success with amongst five allsvenska(Swedish first division) gold.
The season 1909 HIF gets its definitiv breakthrough as a Scanian great team. If it depends on the new dress or not may be unsaid, but from now HIF plays in red jerseys and blue shorts. Earlier it was white jerseys, blue shorts and usually cap. For the first time the team become Scanian champions, a titel with high status at this time. The final between HIF and Malmö BI at Olympia gives an excess of as much as 1.435 crowns.
For HIF:s part 1914 is a remarkable year. On the one hand the team loses by 5-4 against Göta in the final about bank director J Svenssons cup. On the other hand HIF goes to final in the Swedish championship which is played in the form of a cup. The final against AIK in Stockholm is lost indeed (we have forgotten the result), but it is in the quarterfinal that the sensation occurs. HIF wins over Örgryte - Sweden’s best team – with as much as 5-1 and football Sweden cry out loud of dismay and surprise. (The semifinal is won away against Uppsala by 1-0.) HIF is so good this year that it with success represents Sweden at the Baltic Games in Malmö. The invitation to participate in the Swedish series, the predecessor to allsvenskan, means the definite recognition of HIF as a great team. The answer is yet a humble no after two long board meetings. The motivation is splited:
1. HIF is convinced that friendly matches at Olympia against hand-picked Swedish and international opposition gives more audience and larger income then to play in the Swedish series. 2. Because of the players jobs it’s hard to gather a good team for long travels to the away matches.
Sunday the 30:th of May 1915 HIF looses against Göta in DM(district championships), again with 5-4 despite strong play advantage. A shame before a loud large audience. The players and trainers which today complain about the presses critical attitude can console oneself with that it was worse in earlier years. Helsingborgs Dagblad slashes:
”It was of course not the usual vigour over HIF:s play. Furthermore Georg Bengtsson was missing. His substitute has no prospects to ever be able to fill in the first-mentioneds place, since he first of all lacks the outer qualifications herefore. His lower extremities don’t move in the tempo that is necessary for a winger, also his ball control didn’t come up to expectations.”
Sunday the 2:th of September 1917 it is match against IFK Göteborg at Olympia in the Swedish Championship’s second round. It is bad weather, but the match is seen yet by nearly 2.000 spectators. HIF does its best match for the year and leads by 1-0 in half-time, but the final result becomes 1-1. It depends mostly on IFK Göteborgs hard play and unsportsmanlike behaviour. The team plays unnecessary hard in second half, knock down players just to play for time, yes even bandy words with the audience. ÖresundsPosten comment on:
”A pair of Gothenburg’s players, Schyllander and Carlsson, had behaved extraordinarily bad and a part of the less well-bred football audience gathered at the Gothenburgers changing-room to straiten things out. If they were to lynch the Gothenburgers or hang them they didn’t say, but for everybodys luck the arrangers settled conditions up, and the troublemakers has now a chance to end up in a blacklist if they make a disturbance once again.”
1918 becomes a new memorable year for HIF. Again second in the Swedish championship. This time after a defeat against IFK Göteborg in the final at Stockholms Stadium. And again we have forgotten the result. In the goal stand a certain Sigge Lindberg, on loan from Drott. Sigge would later play 50 international matches for Sweden.
